Alma, I have been reading about the criticism regarding your rendition of
Our Lady of Guadalupe (wearing a swim suit). First off, I was raised
Catholic and was an altar boy at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Santa Fe
for about 5 years and went to the Guadalupe Catholic School for 8 years.
Though I do not consider myself to be religious, I have always revered the
image of Our Lady of Guadalupe for many reasons. So, when I saw your
image, I loved it. We take too many things too seriously and I always
believe in widening our horizons and accept new ideas. I do not find the
image sacriligious at all and believe it is appropriate to show it in
Santa Fe at the Museum. If there are posters of that image, please let me
know where I could find one.

YOU TITLE YOURSELF AN ARTIST? THAT IS CERTAINLY QUESTIONABLE AND YOUR
COLLAGE IS IN POOR TASTE EVEN FOR A CATHOLIC.
If you actually believe painting Our lady of Guadalupe as you have is
depicting your Roman Catholic faith, then you are not 100% Roman Catholic.
You are one of the reasons the POPE is so upset with the American
church-no respect for Our Lady. It doesn't matter what you say to me and I
hope you don't write back because your type of Catholic is disgraceful,
and to disrespect Our Lady during Lent is even worse. If you had any
respect for her, you would never have done this, but then again, nobody
respects anybody anymore and this is why there is so much disrespect in
America. The next time you decide to display your so called art, stay away
from New Mexico-the least amount of people like you the better we are-I am
appalled that you call yourself a Roman Catholic. You wish you were a true
Catholic because if you were you would never have trashed Our Lady the way
you have. God help you.
Alma, Your work shines wonderfully brighter as the Dark Age returns in
clouds of fragile intellect and spirituality! Your work is intelligent.
SHAME ON YOU! DON'T CALL YOURSELF A ROMAN CATHOLIC! YOU HAVE DISGRACED GOD
AND WOMEN IN NORTHERN NM. APOLOGIZE NOW! AND REPENT! USE YOUR WOMENLY
STRENGTHS ON HELPING OUR PEOPLE AND DISGRACING THEM! IF YOU DECIDE TO KEEP
UP WITH THIS SO CALLED ART! MOVE TO LAS VEGAS, THE LIKE THAT - - - - !
Alma Lopez, Getting critisizm for your depiction of Our lady of Guadalupe
in a bikini? Good! the lady is idolatry to begin with, any Christ centered
Christian who reads and studies the Bible knows that. You are a Catholic,
but obviously not a Christian. God tells his people to tear down the idols
in their lives. Putting the lady in a bikini is tearing down an idol. Go
for it!! I am a born again Christian, and with or without a bikini I spit
on any image of Our lady of Guadalupe, knowing full well I do so to an
Idol and with Gods full authority backing me up.
I am also a Roman Catholic who went to Catholic schools in Santa Fe, NM
for 12 years. My Dad is Emilio Ortiz, the Director at the Santuario de
Guadalupe, and when he told me of the artwork on display that is
desecrating our Virgen de Guadalupe, I had to see for myself. I live in
Seattle was able to find you on the Internet, and I wish I hadn't. I't's
terrible to think that a fellow Catholic has these images in her head and
allows them to seep into the mainstream. If you wanted controversay, then
congratulations. It's sad what you are capable of creating to get
attention and free publicity. I'll pray for you!
Hi my name is also Alma Lopez...I am wondering where I can find your work,
do you have an agent....please email me at email@example.com. Thanks.
It's kewl, babe... be strong!
Since this seems to be the most deadly serious guestbook I've seen, I
think it needs lightening up. Therefore, I only have this to say about Our
Lady: That Raquel is sure one hot tamale! Yeeeeeeh!
These are beautiful images--thank you for making them.
Your depiction of Our Lady of Guadalupe is great. You take her off the
pedestal and and show her as a woman. Her hands are no longer tied and the
woman occupies space. She conveys confidence and defiance. The gesture of
her body, the nakedbess of the angel and the floral images convey
pleasure. As a child I always thought that the Virgen was a captive
because of the tied hands. I also thought that she sat on a nail and was
repressing a scream. I love your depiction of la Virgen.
Dear Alma, checked out your artwork , PRETTY COOL. I am a latina fellow
artist also, I wondered if you can enlighten me on any programs etc.
concerning us latina artists I would really appreciate it. I have looked
on the internet but came up with nada, hope to here from you TAKE CARE.
Hola Alma, First off I would like to say that I think your art is great
because it gets a reaction from people. I think your digital work is very
innovative and creative. Art is the essence that reflects who we are and
reflects our experiences. I think it is great you express your self and
what you think of the catholic church. I think peolple that get offened
are not grounded in their catholic faith. I was raised catholic and still
am catholic. I think it is important to mention, that not everyone who was
raised catholic is a product of a rigid institution. My experience with
catholicism has been a very positive one and my image of Our Lady of
Guadalupe is different from yours. But,that's okay, it should be because
everyone has had different experiences that mold who they are. I think
society should really think about a work of art as a reflection of one's
story and experience, instead of a threat.Perhaps, those that feel
threatend or offended by your images are not too sure of what they believe
in, otherwise they would not be offended by someone else's art.
